"The Shadow Between Us started off slow for me and unfortunately the story was never able to gain steam. There were so many questions I had within the first few chapters of the book and instead of making this suspenseful and giving me the desire to quickly read, I kept getting frustrated by the lack of depth in the story. The story line had an interesting concept but there was too much of a mysterious air for too long that kept me disengaged. I tried to stay with the book as best I could and chose to speed read through some chapters to try to finally get an answer or two and there were some big moments revealed toward the end, but I needed something a little more to keep me interested in the beginning to get that to that point. I do like a lot of Carol Mason stories, but this one just missed the mark for me.

I received a review copy - I received an ARC of this book from from a Goodread's Giveaway. Thanks to everyone who made this possible for my honest review. I've never read a book by this author and understand she writes "Women's Fiction" which I usually try and avoid. But hey, I'm willing to read it and give it a go. The beginning was slow going and I couldn't get into caring much for the principle characters. Maybe because of the tedious beginning, it just never seemed to pick up any steam and it really didn't keep me engaged like I anticipated. Well written, but not the kind of book I would go out of my way to read. It just missed the mark for me.
- "Received an Advance Reader Copy in exchange for a fair review"
A fascinating story about loss and healing, marriage and love, and how you can find friendships and new beginnings in the most unexpected places and with the most unimaginable people.
Full of sadness and secrets, “The Shadow Between Us†features a “not overly sentimental or romantic†heroine, hiding deep hurts of her own, and a wounded former SEAL who helps her heal. - Olivia and Ned are both wounded people. You can see his physical wounds but not his mental ones, nor can you see that Olivia is also hurting. Both of them have landed in Port Townsend, a lovely town, where they are trying to rebuild their lives. They meet in a correspondence club (I'd never heard of this before). As the chapters go, their personal secrets spool out. You'll understand more as you read more but there are twists. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. This is nicely written and the sort of novel that will make you want to know what happened next.
- Carol Mason writes with a finesse and style that pulls you in to the story, grabs you by the collar and holds you there until the final page, in sweaty desperation. You care deeply about the characters and The Shadow Between Us is no different.
The story of a woman with a secret who leaves town to get perspective is a compelling one but the unfolding of this particular story is masterful. Mason lets out just enough information as we go along, to keep the reader in a state of worry and wonder that the hero might not make it through this tragedy. So often, Women's Fiction has heroines that don't have a sense of humor but Mason's heroine's are delightfully funny in a way that doesn't take away from their enormous task. Olivia is no different. Olivia's ability to see the humor in situations carries us through a dark time in her life that might otherwise be filled with angst and denial. The relationships in this novel are real, raw and written beautifully. I found myself wanting to stare over Ms. Mason's shoulder while she writes, asking her questions about her process.
If you enjoy Women's Fiction and typically choose novels that tackle heavy subjects, like Jodi Piccoult, you are sure to find The Shadow Between Us a book that satisfies on every level. - Mental, consuming flashbacks of a terrible car accident haunt Olivia in this heart grabbing story. Each page brings shadowy information on the circumstances that drove her to take a break from her life and her marriage. Meeting horribly disfigured war veteran Ned and listening to his philosophies may be the key to Olivia’s finally healing.
It is a touching novel filled with sadness and revelations that will reach your heart.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. - Well written, and great character development, but slow going. I heard good things about this book, but I didn’t enjoy it. I felt like the book was dragging on while I waited for something to happen. It lacked suspense and anything gripping. Although, there were a couple of things that happened, but not until the end of the book, it’s not worth the read for me.It just didn’t keep my interest at all. 2 stars for being well written and having great character development.
Thank you Netgalley and UK for this advanced readers copy in exchange for an honest review. - Had to put it down too boring. I got about 25% through it and couldn't give it anymore of my time it just dragged way.too much.
