As Mason strengthens his magic over metal and stone, the Master lurks in the shadows.
To lure the Master out and stop his nefarious plot, Mason and his harem of mages and princesses have to do several things
1) Take over the Order of Mages
2) Build a train and railroad system to connect the kingdoms of Illaria and Cedis
3) Keep from getting burned by giant, murderous creatures made of flame

Sounds like a piece of cake, right?

"Mason is inventing up a storm in his adopted world. It seems the "Master" is taking exception to his meddling.. You know saving people and countries. This time Mason is making trains and who doesn't love trains? The Master, that's who.
The mechanics were a bit oversimplified but it's magic right. Still a fun and entertaining read. I look forward to more. Masons excitement is contagious."

Metal Mage 3 eBook Eric Vall Reviews

  • Really enjoyed this book, takes what has come before and spreads the foundation that was previously laid out wider and builds on it wisely. This review is intentionally vague to avoid spoiling anything for readers. While the metal Mage is still the main character by far, the rest of the world is getting filled in. Lots of new side characters including a potential new harem member. The two current harem members both have far more side activities to accomplish in this book giving room for for other characters to get some spotlight throughout the novel. The whole plot of the book was fun and made a great deal of sense from the MM's POV. The one minor disappointment was the main villain was too easy to discern and only interesting from the threats he threw at the protagonists, and not at all for his limited personality, but I do approve of who got to take him out. A fun book that bodes well for the future of the series. Thank you Eric Vail for writing this and your other series.

My personal plea at the end of the review. Michael Scott Earle is one of my favorite authors. On his Facebook page he suggested his readers check out Planet Brokers by a new author named Eric Vail. I liked the story, it was not so awesome that it blew away any other book I've read but it was a good solid story, with a strong plot, interesting characters and quality writing. I've continued reading Eric's releases as well as Planet Brokers 2 and buy every new book he releases. Sadly the sales were poor compared to later books. As mentioned Eric Vail is a good enough author I buy all of his new releases but Planet Brokers still holds a special spot and I miss the series. My hope is that if enough people go back and buy the first two books in the series sales will get to a point where it will make sense to revive the series. I have no idea how many sales it will take to accomplish this. I'd guess the whole idea is akin to a hail mary pass but it might work and I figure at the worst I've steered some people toward a dead series that is still a good read.
  • Mason is inventing up a storm in his adopted world. It seems the "Master" is taking exception to his meddling.. You know saving people and countries. This time Mason is making trains and who doesn't love trains? The Master, that's who.
The mechanics were a bit oversimplified but it's magic right. Still a fun and entertaining read. I look forward to more. Masons excitement is contagious.
  • First of all, thank you Eric Vall. This book is near perfect, if not perfect. I love the way the author builds upon the magic system. I also enjoy how how the protagonist makes use of his memory on earth and combines it with his unique abilities in order to make inventions. It's like the Wild Wild West with magic thrown in for good measure. An exceptional book and series. Can't wait for the next one.
  • I really liked how the author allowed the MC to use ideas from earth to make his world better. This is a classic good vs evil book but it's not boring or too mundane. I'm very much interested in his next book in this series. Get this series as you won't be disappointed.
  • I thoroughly enjoyed this book just as I did the previous two books. The author seems to go from strength to strength with his storyline, character development as well as all the new elements he keep adding to the story.
  • They just keep getting better and better. I just love the world that the author has created and the bond between the MC and his women. It’s a great book that you should read.
  • Liking the series more and more as they go further afield. One critical issue buffalo wings are served with Bleu Cheese, ranch is a heresy. Jus' saying.
  • Eric Vall has done it again , This third book is a great addition to the Metal Mage universe .
Looking forward to the next set of books that Mr. Vall hopefully plans to.write in this world.

How we filter out what is irrelevant so we can focus on what we need to know.

We are surrounded by a world rich with visual information, but we pay attention to very little of it, filtering out what is irrelevant so we can focus on what we think we need to know. Advertisers, web designers, and other “attention architects” try hard to get our attention, promoting products with videos on huge outdoor screens, adding flashing banners to websites, and developing computer programs with blinking icons that tempt us to click. Often they succeed in distracting us from what we are supposed to be doing. In HowAttention Works, Stefan Van der Stigchel explains the process of attention and what the implications are for our everyday lives.

The visual attention system is efficient, Van der Stigchel writes, because it doesn't waste energy processing every scrap of visual data it receives; it gathers only relevant information. We focus on one snippet of information and assume that everything else is stable and consistent with past experience; that's why most people miss even the most glaring continuity errors in films. If an object doesn't meet our expectations, chances are we won't see it. Van der Stigchel makes his case with examples from real life, explaining, among other things, the limitations of color perception (and why fire trucks shouldn't be red); the importance of location (security guards and radiologists, for example, have to know where to look); the attention-getting properties of faces and spiders; what we can learn from someone else's eye movements; why we see what we expect to see (magicians take advantage of this); and visual neglect and unattended information.

Box of Dares 100 Sexy Prompts for Couples Chronicle Books 9781452172170 Books Reviews

  • This was a great idea that could have been executed better. First the packaging it was shipped in smashed the box because it was just a bag no big deal though I guess. Then it’s hard to tear these off cleanly. We ended up tearing them all off laminating them. Now we have a fun box we can reach in and grab a good idea out of. This is definitely a good why to spice up your love life. One of the things are very exciting. Most I would have never thought to try. My only reason for not giving 5 stars was the packaging it was shipped in and the perforation on the paper.
  • I thought this would be a game, item is extremely cheap. Small box with paper slips. Embarrassing to hand out as a gift.
  • Cheap. Not worth buying. Very disappointed in the quality.
  • Not even sexy, weird awkward type sex requests -
  • Take a dare and buy this product...It is a fun way to spice things up.
  • Not worth $10. Its cool. Maybe I'd buy it for like 5 or so.
  • Bought one for my boyfriend and one for my friend and her fiance. It hasn't been used too much but looking forward to seeing what dares are next!
  • So much fun! Exactly as expected.

What is it about the coast that attracts people running from their past?

When Olivia moves to Port Townsend, her marriage is floundering, and her life is in pieces. She doesn’t know if things with her husband Mark are truly over, or quite why the phone call she longs for on her daughter’s birthday will never come.

Joining a letter-writing club seems like a harmless decision. But when she meets Ned, an ex-soldier badly wounded in Afghanistan, this unlooked-for friendship revives unexpected emotions and memories she’d rather forget.

Can Olivia find the courage to confront what she’s hiding from and finally begin to heal the wounds that have torn her life apart? From the bestselling author of After You Left comes a story about finding hope in second chances.

"The Shadow Between Us started off slow for me and unfortunately the story was never able to gain steam. There were so many questions I had within the first few chapters of the book and instead of making this suspenseful and giving me the desire to quickly read, I kept getting frustrated by the lack of depth in the story. The story line had an interesting concept but there was too much of a mysterious air for too long that kept me disengaged. I tried to stay with the book as best I could and chose to speed read through some chapters to try to finally get an answer or two and there were some big moments revealed toward the end, but I needed something a little more to keep me interested in the beginning to get that to that point. I do like a lot of Carol Mason stories, but this one just missed the mark for me.

I do like a lot of Carol Mason stories, but this one just missed the mark for me.
    I received a review copy
  • I received an ARC of this book from from a Goodread's Giveaway. Thanks to everyone who made this possible for my honest review. I've never read a book by this author and understand she writes "Women's Fiction" which I usually try and avoid. But hey, I'm willing to read it and give it a go. The beginning was slow going and I couldn't get into caring much for the principle characters. Maybe because of the tedious beginning, it just never seemed to pick up any steam and it really didn't keep me engaged like I anticipated. Well written, but not the kind of book I would go out of my way to read. It just missed the mark for me.
  • "Received an Advance Reader Copy in exchange for a fair review"
A fascinating story about loss and healing, marriage and love, and how you can find friendships and new beginnings in the most unexpected places and with the most unimaginable people.
Full of sadness and secrets, “The Shadow Between Us” features a “not overly sentimental or romantic” heroine, hiding deep hurts of her own, and a wounded former SEAL who helps her heal.
  • Olivia and Ned are both wounded people. You can see his physical wounds but not his mental ones, nor can you see that Olivia is also hurting. Both of them have landed in Port Townsend, a lovely town, where they are trying to rebuild their lives. They meet in a correspondence club (I'd never heard of this before). As the chapters go, their personal secrets spool out. You'll understand more as you read more but there are twists. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. This is nicely written and the sort of novel that will make you want to know what happened next.
  • Carol Mason writes with a finesse and style that pulls you in to the story, grabs you by the collar and holds you there until the final page, in sweaty desperation. You care deeply about the characters and The Shadow Between Us is no different.
The story of a woman with a secret who leaves town to get perspective is a compelling one but the unfolding of this particular story is masterful. Mason lets out just enough information as we go along, to keep the reader in a state of worry and wonder that the hero might not make it through this tragedy. So often, Women's Fiction has heroines that don't have a sense of humor but Mason's heroine's are delightfully funny in a way that doesn't take away from their enormous task. Olivia is no different. Olivia's ability to see the humor in situations carries us through a dark time in her life that might otherwise be filled with angst and denial. The relationships in this novel are real, raw and written beautifully. I found myself wanting to stare over Ms. Mason's shoulder while she writes, asking her questions about her process.
If you enjoy Women's Fiction and typically choose novels that tackle heavy subjects, like Jodi Piccoult, you are sure to find The Shadow Between Us a book that satisfies on every level.
  • Mental, consuming flashbacks of a terrible car accident haunt Olivia in this heart grabbing story. Each page brings shadowy information on the circumstances that drove her to take a break from her life and her marriage. Meeting horribly disfigured war veteran Ned and listening to his philosophies may be the key to Olivia’s finally healing.
It is a touching novel filled with sadness and revelations that will reach your heart.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
  • Well written, and great character development, but slow going. I heard good things about this book, but I didn’t enjoy it. I felt like the book was dragging on while I waited for something to happen. It lacked suspense and anything gripping. Although, there were a couple of things that happened, but not until the end of the book, it’s not worth the read for me.It just didn’t keep my interest at all. 2 stars for being well written and having great character development.

Thank you Netgalley and UK for this advanced readers copy in exchange for an honest review.
  • Had to put it down too boring. I got about 25% through it and couldn't give it anymore of my time it just dragged way.too much.

Sentinel Become the Agent in Charge of Your Own Protection Detail edition by Patrick McNamara Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

  • SentinelBecome the agent in charge of your own protection detail is written by a man who has been there and does that . The author has 22 years of Special Operations experience in hostile environments. This is a short (128 pgs.) but information packed book. Whether you are a Security professional in charge of someones safety or a family man responsible for the well being of your wife and children , you will benefit from the information in this book. Stressed throughout is proper preparation and situational awareness. Know where you are, who is around you and what are the conditions. From self defense, first aid, firearms,, bug out bags and go bags there is helpful tips to increase your chance of survival when faced with the unexpected. There is a passage on pg. 52 that sums up the authors approach to protecting yourself and others " Basically every step we take toward having complete power over are lives is one step away from being a victim, where we have none." Following the advice in this book by Patrick McNamara will give you more power and lessen your chance of becoming a victim. Recommended.
  • ... poke me in the eye with a pencil!" This is sage advice from Pat McNamara. Pat is one of the most experienced guys that teaches and writes for civilians, and this is his advice to keeping your family safe. It includes advice on all aspects of self defense both in the home, on foot and on the road. There is information on shooting, hand-to hand, driving, vehicle maintainance and other subjects. Tips like mobility is key, not only the tip- but how to achieve it, which lacks in a lot of civilian oriented tactical writing. It is written in an awesome format, comparing the modern head of the family to the agent in charge of a security detail. It takes you from the profesional's responsibility to what the civilian must do.

At the price there is no reason that a person interested in personal security should not have this in their library. If you don't know who Pat is I would recomend checking out his vids on YouTube. He is a beast, a true warrior, and imagining him as a family man, the "Sentinel" is fun.
  • As someone who travels often into questionable countries and cities around the world, the advice from Patrick McNamara has reinforced my defensive awareness protocol and added concepts that leveled my preparations up significantly.

I have read many stories or watched surveillance video where the victim did not know, violated or forgot the concepts from this book and paid a serious price, including death.

The book is filled with words of wisdom and checklists to keep on track. Absolutely a gem for all of us staying sharp to protect ourselves and our loved ones.
  • Can't wait to see the YouTube series based on this. I wish my wife could have read this when the kids were young and I was army so she could understand the way I think because I'm not articulate like TMac.
Many not employed in certain fields of work will find this extreme BUT if they look closely they accomplish many of the tasks daily without knowing it or the terminology. You may not understand "frag order" but it's simple like "load up we r going for ice cream".
When an operator of this skill level tells you not to look for trouble you should take heed. It doesn't mean you hide either, you prepare and react.
  • This is a sort of one-stop shop for tactical thinking where your family is concerned. If you were to pair it with Cody Lundin's When All Hell Breaks Loose, I think you'd feel far more competent about preparing for the unexpected and watching over your family. I'm no expert on the sheepdog concept, but I grew up poor in the rural south. As the man of the house, worrying about your family and trying to keep the wife and kids safe is something you just did as man of the house. This book teaches you how to apply military schema and ideas to that man if the house duty. It's short, but there's a lot of info. I hope Pat McNamara keeps writing.
  • If you have ever seen Patrick McNamara on television or YouTube, then you are already familiar with his "no nonsense" approach - and this book lives up to his reputation. You'll be grateful for his straightforward advice on how to take charge of your personal security, an I assure you - you will learn something new.
  • Pat Mac is a great teacher and he writes clear and concessive. The in formation in this book applies to any man or women who is the head of there house hold or responsible for others safety. From shooting drills, driving techniques, disaster prep, to getting ready to go to the fair with kids, home defense, fitness, the list goes on, this book will benefit everyone who reads it. It's a layman's guild to life, and is filled with knowledge at all levels. As Mr McNamara would say " it's never a "disabler and can only be an enabler". if you're looking for a shooting guild this is not it. But if you're looking to become better in all aspects of life give this book a shot, it's short enough and cheap enough to not be disappointed.
  • As one who has published widely on targeted attacks and protection, I was very keen to get McNamara's personal insight on the topic. I was not disappointed. McNamara takes an "all threats" perspective providing a lot of excellent material allowing for the average person to enhance their overall security. Even for those with military/law enforcement/EP backgrounds, there is much that can be learned. I can tell you that my copy has many highlighted sections and that I will be incorporating a fair amount of his training techniques into my personal training - both combat fitness and tactical - regimen. The book is a relatively quick read, although I can imagine many going back to parts time and again. The only reason for not giving it the full 5 stars was some of the editing (not to be a hypocrite as I have had my own issues on this) needed some work.

Graham Hancock's multimillion best seller Fingerprints of the Gods remains an astonishing, deeply controversial, wide-ranging investigation of the mysteries of our past and the evidence for Earth's lost civilization. Twenty years on, Hancock returns with the sequel to his seminal work, filled with completely new scientific and archaeological evidence, which has only recently come to light....

Near the end of the last ice age, 12,800 years ago, a giant comet that had entered the solar system from deep space thousands of years earlier broke into multiple fragments. Some of these struck the Earth, causing a global cataclysm on a scale unseen since the extinction of the dinosaurs. At least eight of the fragments hit the North American ice cap while further fragments hit the Northern European ice cap. The impacts, from comet fragments a mile wide approaching at more than 60,000 miles an hour, generated huge amounts of heat that instantly liquidized millions of square kilometers of ice, destabilizing the Earth's crust and causing the global deluge that is remembered in myths all around the world.

A second series of impacts, equally devastating, causing further cataclysmic flooding, occurred 11,600 years ago - the exact date that Plato gave for the destruction and submergence of Atlantis. The evidence revealed in this book shows beyond reasonable doubt that an advanced civilization that flourished during the Ice Age was destroyed in the global cataclysms between 12,800 and 11,600 years ago. But there were survivors - known to later cultures by names such as "the Sages", "the Magicians", "the Shining Ones", and "the Mystery Teachers of Heaven". They travelled the world in their great ships, doing all in their power to keep the spark of civilization burning. They settled at key locations - Gobekli Tepe in Turkey, Baalbek in the Lebanon, Giza in Egypt, ancient Sumer, Mexico, Peru, and across the Pacific, where a huge pyramid has recently been discovered in Indonesia. Everywhere they went these "Magicians of the Gods" brought with them the memory of a time when mankind had fallen out of harmony with the universe and paid a heavy price. A memory and a warning to the future...for the comet that wrought such destruction between 12,800 and 11,600 years ago may not be done with us yet. Astronomers believe that a 20-mile-wide "dark" fragment of the original giant comet remains hidden within its debris stream and threatens the Earth. An astronomical message encoded at Gobekli Tepe and in the Sphinx and the pyramids of Egypt warns that the "Great Return" will occur in our time....

"The book is transformational and like a college course. I will no longer believe the history of the world in the same acceptance found in all libraries, written history. THERE IS MUCH MORE AND THERE WAS A FLOOD GLOBALLY. Truth in that or if you doubt requires reading here. My one criticism is the author is so defensive it bogs down so you want to skip pages. However the defense is likely required since all archaeology and all discoveries are threatened by the premise of a history 10,000 years ago predating all the experts now published so Hancock's findings vs the world experts will be a war. I think he is 90% correct and this changes all history books and sets a new normal for the history of the world as we know it. Worth reading, a long book but in itself it is a new history of the world and it will change your thinking."

Magicians of the Gods The Forgotten Wisdom of Earth&rsquos Lost Civilization Audible Audio Edition Graham Hancock Macmillan Audio Books Reviews

  • Compared to Hancock's earlier work, this book is more mature and less speculative. Hancock carefully and thoroughly presents evidence for his research that seems on par with academic standards. What's presented here should no longer be called "pseudoarchaeology". I suspect someday we will look back on Hancock's work as an inflection point or tipping point in rewriting history.

Hancock's strongest (and almost irrefutable) theory is that there was a lost, global advanced civilization prior to Sumerian and Egyptian cultures. Hancock provides evidence that points to a comet hitting earth around 10,500BC, melting the ice caps / ice age, and a simultaneous rising-sea wiping out this civilization along with most of their technology. This is probably his weakest theory, though it has some valid and well-supported points. Hancock points to the flood legends around the globe, including Noah's biblical flood, as a reference to this flood along with evidence that a comet did in fact hit earth near the north pole. Though Hancock himself does not seem to subscribe to the biblical "Genesis Record", his work greatly helps the case for at least parts of it. Genesis / biblical flood proponents could see Hancock's work fitting nicely into their chronology of events, except with two cataclysms

    1) An advanced culture occupies earth
    2) A worldwide cataclysm occurs which not only floods the earth, but causes mass volcanic eruptions. The extreme mass of particles in the atmosphere reflect sunlight and cause global cooling (Research "hydroplate theory")
    3) A small group of humans survive this deluge, bringing animal life with them, AND the technological knowledge of their culture. They exit their "ark" while the flood waters recede. The earth is still very cool, and ice has formed everywhere.
    4) This band of survivors use their technological knowledge to form an advanced culture and spread across the globe rapidly. They build Göbekli Tepe, the Great Pyramid, Sacsayhuaman, and possibly other monuments such as Stone Henge...etc. Genesis proponents would point to the Nimrod /Babel period. The epic of Gigamesh also could confirm this.
    5) After a few hundred years, the ice begins to melt -either from natural global warming or through the events of Hancock's younger dryas comet, sea level rises again, and wipes out much of this advanced civilization. The remnants of this civilization eventually become the Sumerian, Egyptian, and other ancient cultures, except much of their technology is lost or no longer understood.
  • The book is transformational and like a college course. Worth reading, a long book but in itself it is a new history of the world and it will change your thinking.
  • I saw some videos on YTube about some of the findings in this book and decided to go to the source.
I'm not very impressed after reading the first 3 chapters.
After just a few Google searches I found eyewitness reports from travelers who, after reading the book , went to some of the places mentioned and found nothing to confirm what the author said about those places.
Chapter 1 is based on an interview with German archaeologist Klaus Schmidt, who died very soon thereafter. So we can't really rely on what the author claims he said in the interview.
in Ch. 2 the author relates a meeting with Danny Hilman Natawedjaja, an Indonesian geologist, and an excavation that began at Gunung Padang in August 2014. People who read this book have subsequently visited the site and there is no sign of any such activity. They talked with the local people there and it just hasn't happened.
I do believe there are many cities/cultures that existed before the timelines in our history books. However, I generally find that most authors who write about them find very few facts that can be authenticated, so they have to supply connections between those facts themselves, which is simply pure speculation. The majority of the information in this book is just that.
One thing I do commend Hancock for is his frequent discussion of the process of radiocarbon dating - it is under scrutiny and its reliability in many instances is suspect at best. Until is is improved it won't be possible to confirm ages reliably.

The first publication in English of the ultimate monograph on painter Lon Spilliaert. Lon Spilliaert (18811946) was one of the most important Flemish Symbolist painters. Although he was embedded in the Symbolist tradition, he was also drawn to the avant-garde. He was, in fact, an einzelgnger, or loner, balancing on the fault line between two centuries, a transitional figure between Symbolism and Surrealism. Spilliaert, like James Ensor, was born and raised in Ostend. And like Ensor, he was also driven by ridicule and irony, non-conformism and the urge to look at the world from a different perspective. He created his own spiritual imagery, experimented with pastel and gouache, and played with purified areas of colour and graceful lines. The sea under a cool moon, lonely figures with a vacant gaze, desolate beaches, empty rooms and stylised silhouettes in backlight Spilliaert was always able to evoke an atmosphere of mystery, magic and alienation in abstract lines and colours. This revised, English-language version of the ultimate Spilliaert book will be published to coincide with the major Spilliaert exhibition at the Royal Academy in London this autumn.

From the Sunday Times top ten bestselling author of The Psychopath Test, a captivating and brilliant exploration of one of our world's most underappreciated forces shame.

'It's about the terror, isn't it?' 'The terror of what?' I said. 'The terror of being found out.'

For the past three years, Jon Ronson has travelled the world meeting recipients of high-profile public shamings. The shamed are people like us - people who, say, made a joke on social media that came out badly, or made a mistake at work. Once their transgression is revealed, collective outrage circles with the force of a hurricane and the next thing they know they're being torn apart by an angry mob, jeered at, demonized, sometimes even fired from their job.

A great renaissance of public shaming is sweeping our land. Justice has been democratized. The silent majority are getting a voice. But what are we doing with our voice? We are mercilessly finding people's faults. We are defining the boundaries of normality by ruining the lives of those outside it. We are using shame as a form of social control.

Simultaneously powerful and hilarious in the way only Jon Ronson can be, So You've Been Publicly Shamed is a deeply honest book about modern life, full of eye-opening truths about the escalating war on human flaws - and the very scary part we all play in it.

Jon Ronson is an award-winning writer and documentary maker. He is the author of two bestsellers, Them Adventures with Extremists and The Men Who Stare at Goats, and two collections, Out of the Ordinary True Tales of Everyday Craziness and What I Do More True Tales of Everyday Craziness. He lives in London.

"I bought this book after reading a few excerpts online. The book is an interesting read, and provides some good examples of modern day social media witch hunts. The reason I am only giving it 3 stars is because it honestly doesn't add much more to what is available online. I think there was only one anecdote in the book that I hadn't already read about online in the articles about this book.

Overall, the anecdotes about people who have been publicly shamed are interesting, but the book seems kind of aimless at times. It also only explores the subject matter at a superficial level, not delving too deeply into causes or consequences of this new trend in social media justice.

It was fast read, and Ronson's style is agreeable and easy. I'm just not sure the actual content was fleshed out enough to warrant the price of a book."

  • I bought this book after reading a few excerpts online.

I'm just not sure the actual content was fleshed out enough to warrant the price of a book.
  • If you're at all involved with social media, I'm willing to bet that if you stop and think for even a few seconds, you can come up with an example of someone -- famous or previously anonymous -- who has been publicly shamed. A car wash worker just lost his job for making disgusting, racist comments about President Obama's daughter -- the ensuing kerfuffle probably ended up winning a larger audience for those comments than he would have had in the first place, ironically enough. There was the tennis championship commenter who asked a female contestant to "give us a twirl" as she went out onto the court for her match (to show off her garb and legs), and more recently, the obituary writer who chose to comment, unflatteringly, on author Colleen McCullough's looks as if they were as important as her achievements. All have been named and shamed online. And that's just off the top of my head, in the last week or two.

The tool of shaming someone publicly for breaking the law or violating the social contract in some other way is as old as time. But with the advent of the Internet, and specifically, the rise of tools like Twitter, shaming can go viral instantly. Instead of your immediate community knowing what you did wrong -- and deciding whether and when to forgive you, because they may have a sense of the broader context and of who you are as a person beyond that misstep -- the entire world now becomes aware, instantly, without any of that context. And the results, as Ronson shows, can be horrifying and potentially disproportionate. Imagine cracking a joke that you know that some folks might consider off color to a buddy sitting next to you at a conference presentation -- then having the woman in front of you turn around, snap your picture, smile at you -- and tweet about how offensive your comments were to women, already a minority and arguably struggling to find a way to feel comfortable in Silicon Valley's "bro culture". That's "D***legate", and it's one of the case studies that Ronson looks at to explore how the Internet has transformed public shaming from one form of potentially violent public pillorying and whipping to a non-violent but far longer lasting and even more damaging variant.

Since Ronson's focus is on the post-Twitter era, you won't find much here about folks like Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky, although Ronson explores an argument that suggests sexual misdeeds are viewed with more tolerance by potential shamers than other transgressions (in contrast to the past, when swingers "outed" by the News of the World committed suicide). But whether the name is a familiar one -- Jonah Lehrer, popular science writer pilloried for inventing quotes and for recycling his own content -- or someone unknown, such as the teenager turned into a pariah for mocking what she saw as a self-evident and superfluous sign at Arlington national cemetery requesting silence and respect -- he does a good job of exploring different examples of shame and reasons for shaming, as well as the societal and historical context.

Ronson does occasionally fall into the trap of what I refer to as "stunt" anecdotes going off to explore things as a participant and taking notes because he knows it will make a good part of the copy to be a fly on the wall. So, the workshop on how to manage and address shame in which he participates becomes a gratuitous anecdote, and some other similar segments felt like overkill.

My five-star rating is as much for the timeliness of the topic as for the book's style and structure, which are really more average than the rating would suggest. It's an OK book, on a standalone basis, but it's the first to really assemble in a coherent fashion all the individual anecdotes and events around this particular theme. It certainly made me think. I've long been aware of the dangers of having a personal "brand", and been vigilant about what I say on social media and my privacy settings on Facebook, for instance. In the social media universe, there simply is no privacy -- or at least, none that you can count on -- and few of those "shame victims" that Ronson profiles in these pages are evil or malicious. Stupid, foolish, careless -- yes. Thoughtless, absolutely. But the shaming, the "mass online destruction" in which people seem to take such delight, seems so disproportionate. "We are defining the boundaries of normality by tearing apart the people outside of it."

This is a great starting point for dialog and discussion, and for that reason alone merits the full five stars.
  • I'm an easily distracted reader, and I can sometimes pick away at a book for an embarrassingly long time before finishing it, but this was one of those rare books that I really "couldn't put down", and finished in record time.

I'd been thinking about this topic quite a bit before I saw this book had been written, because there have been several examples recently of massive, scorched earth web campaigns against things that I thought was fairly innocuous. It seemed like yet another example of how quickly seemingly civilized people can turn into a vicious pack of animals, and it's frightening, even in the service of a "good" cause.

The web can be a powerful tool for justice when other avenues have failed, for example, when an individual is fighting a powerful company. On the other hand, sometimes the punishment can vastly outweigh the crime, and peoples' lives end up ruined for one tasteless joke on Twitter, or even a complete misunderstanding.

Ronson goes through numerous examples, some of which I'd heard of and some of which I hadn't. He then connects internet shaming to historical public shaming, and explores other sorts of shaming, going so far as to visit the filming of an S&M movie.

It's interesting and entertaining from beginning to end. I was particularly fascinated to learn that there are now companies who (for a very large fee) will "obscure" your internet presence, so embarrassing things won't be quite so prominent.

My heart gave it five stars because it was fun to read. My head might ding it one, because it never really comes together with a coherent theme. Much as he did in The Men Who Stare at Goats, he tells a lot of very entertaining stories, and then tries to tie it together by connecting dots that don't really connect. A lot of things - like the trip the the S&M club - are just enjoyable non-sequiturs. It seems like he's trying to overthink something that's not really that complicated - just a natural extension of human nature into the digital age.

There's no great epiphany, and it's not clear anything can be "done" about the situation. Still, the book is very entertaining, and serves as a good cautionary tale, both for our own behavior, and for our reactions to the behavior of others. Highly recommended.
